Chapter 1152: "Daytime Rain" Lens Language

Beijing Communication University, School of Drama and Film.

"Qingyan, think of a few questions related to "Daytime Rain" and report them to me later. They are the big questions on the test paper, and they are used for undergraduate exams."

"Okay." Xie Qingyan, who was organizing his book notes, glanced at the calendar on the desk, "I'll send it to you tomorrow or the day after tomorrow."

"Yeah." The tutor nodded casually, and suddenly remembered something, and called his student, "Oh, yes, did you ask me last time if the new issue of "Shuoying" has arrived? Was it "Shuoying" or "Hundred Years"? Anyway, everything that should have arrived has arrived now, so go to the newspaper column in the library and take a look."

"Okay, I'm going there." Xie Qingyan smiled.

"Write a review after reading it and show it to me."

"No problem."

Xie Qingyan, the unified ID of the whole network "Actors are not acting when they are not acting me", a master's student of Beijing Communication University, majoring in drama and film, second year of graduate school.

The one who is close to the water gets the moon first. When countless colleagues were still lying in the topic area and wailing, "Why hasn't the October issue of "A Century of Light and Shadow" that I ordered arrived yet?", Xie Qingyan, who was in the same major, had already registered for borrowing in the library of his own college and was walking back to the dormitory.

The keychain with the Q-version Qin Jue pendant shook with a rustling sound. Xie Qingyan held the book in one hand and opened the door with the other. His temperament was still calm, but his calm expression rarely revealed a bit of excitement.

His roommate was still working on his thesis in the library. Xie Qingyan put down his notebook and "A Century of Light and Shadow", went to make a cup of coffee before sitting at the desk, turned on the computer, clicked on the official website of a certain Ban from the tab page, and skillfully searched for "Daytime Rain".

[Urgent, urgent, urgent, urgent, why hasn't the score of the film research been released yet? I'll bet on 85+ conservatively]

[[Reply] I can see that the host is very conservative. I guess the score will be at least 90. Who agrees and who disagrees? 】

【[Reply] I was going to make a blind guess that the MVA of Yanying is Qin Jue, but then I thought about it and it was set in stone. Who would guess this? I am a fool. Goodbye】*

【Qin Jue's audition video made me feel like I was watching the prequel to Mossen. It's awesome】

【[Reply] Why is it that he is the only one who has no gravity when everyone lives on the Blue Planet... Can people really do those actions? Are you sure it's not wirework or special effects? ? (I know it's not, I'm just expressing my surprise. Don't argue with me. You're right.)】

【[Reply] Although it's a bit unethical, I have captured a lot of Tang Ting's emoticons from the background board. If you need it, you can send me a private message and I will send you a copy [It's really a ghost.jpg][Are you kidding me? .jpg][You kid! .jpg]】

【A big collection of film reviews and analysis posts, all of which are useful information. Come quickly】

【[Reply] I saw an analysis of lens language recently. I personally think it is relatively novel and worth reading. [Link]]

[[Reply·Reply] I read it, it's very pertinent, and there's another one I think is also good [Link]]

Swiping across the lines of water posts, Xie Qingyan clicked on the two links in the summary post to absorb new content.

"Stable performance, no breakthroughs, new changes in plainness - Let's talk about He Xu's shooting style"

First of all, I've been a fan of He Xu for many years. I cried so hard when the old man retired. This year, I can finally see He's work again, and I'm very moved.

I remember someone said that there are many directors who shoot documentaries, but He Xu is the one who can blend the two perceptions of "documentary" and "movie" seamlessly.

It's wonderful. Looking at the old man's previous works, a careful analysis shows that they are basically all basic shots, such as cutting angles and over-the-shoulder shots. It feels like any student in the editing and directing department can do it. But what He Xu shoots has a strong sense of realistic narrative, using the most rustic techniques to tell the most real stories, which are both simple and artistic, and express the most profound connotations.

I also watched "The Cage" before. Jiang Shuming learned from He Xu. For example, in the part where Wang Ziqian was deeply affected by drugs, he first used darkness to set the atmosphere, and then suddenly took a close-up when the lights were turned on. This shooting technique of using the lens to do "plain drawing" obviously has the shadow of He Xu. The visual impact is very wonderful, but it is still inferior to his master. After all, it is a bit deliberate when you look closely.

Here are three examples of "Daytime Rain" to prove that the old is still the best.

The first is the parallel editing that is widely praised by everyone. Mo Sen tortured Su Qi here, and Tian Gang and Qiu Xue were doing things there. The similar actions, expressions, and sounds under the staggered shots expressed both opposite contents and a highly unified theme - "primitive desire". The contrast was straightforward and naked, and while mobilizing the sensory experience, it also revealed a sharp and spicy irony. It was indeed a very exquisite treatment.

But what I want to talk about here is the details. Although few people mention it, I believe that as long as I mention the part where "Mossen beats Su Qi, and Su Qi becomes incontinent due to stress reactions such as pain, fear and despair", no audience will have no impression after watching "Daytime Rain".

Because the camera did capture it, that is, the semi-close-up shot of urine dripping down, which is very short, shaking and quickly cutting to the close-up and medium shot. In the close-up, Su Qi crawls forward in a panic, and there is a water mark on the crotch of her jeans.

This is where He Xu is better than Jiang Shuming. The old man did not specifically magnify and emphasize it, telling you "Su Qi is scared to pee", but he will use the camera to tell you: there is such a detail here.

Then the details are integrated into the whole picture, the composition is very harmonious, and it forms a natural impact.

Then all the details piled up together will make the audience feel so real, so scary, and creepy.

The second part is also about this part, but it is before Su Qi was knocked down and killed by Mossen.

At that time, Mossen successfully killed Cao Hao, and half of his face was splashed with blood. He turned his head to look at Su Qi, and Su Qi was stiff and dared not move.

The room was very dark. Director He did not give Mossen's face a close-up, but blurred Su Qi's back in the camera, and filmed Mossen's moving white eyes in the dim environment from her perspective.

This white eye is so fucking scary, fuck.

It feels that under normal circumstances, when facing such a plot, the director will take a close-up of the face and then a close-up of the eyes, and shoot the actor's pupil moving to express "my eyes are locked on you". But He Xu did not do this. He did not shoot the pupil, but the white of the eye. That little light color is extremely conspicuous in the dark room, and it is not a close-up, but just an ordinary medium close-up. In the camera, Mossen and Su Qi are at a distance that is not far or close, and the impact is both real and extraordinary.

It's not "locking you", but "eyeing you". At first glance, this part will feel weird and scary because of the relatively bright color of the white of the eye. If you think about it carefully, you can realize that the movement of the white of the eye is directly equivalent to the movement of Mo Sen's eyes. The underlying expression is "I am watching you".

This superposition of the first reaction + the second reaction, plus the premise that she just witnessed her fiancé being killed, it's no wonder that Su Qi was so scared that she couldn't move. If it were me, I would definitely be stunned.

(By the way, I would like to praise Qin Jue's eye acting, haha, I couldn't help but go off topic)

And if I remember correctly, there are two similar treatments in the whole film. One is here, and the other is later when Mo Sen waited for Qiu Xue to come back at Tian Gang's house. The white of the eye moves slowly in the dark. When you notice the white of the eye the next second, you realize that you have made eye contact with the murderer.

It's so good, so tasteful.

The third one is similar to the first one, which is when Mo Sen kills the patrolman.

It is also a very impressive clip. The thin Mossen pressed his whole body on the patrolman, and stabbed the kitchen knife through the heavy police uniform. He was too thin and could only rely on his weight. Because he was trying hard, his buttocks were raised and his legs were kicked up. Only his toes were barely on the ground. It was almost a head-down posture, which was ugly and real.

And what else exacerbated this sense of reality? Yes, it was the camera.

The medium close-up shot was a bit far away. It was almost a rectangle with two lines drawn horizontally and vertically. From left to right and from top to bottom, it was divided into four parts, ABCD. Mossen only stabbed people with his buttocks in the B part.

The angle of looking down was not large either, basically a slightly higher angle than the horizontal view. To put it in a funny way, it was as if you were sitting in the entrance (note that you were sitting), and then watching Mossen killing people in a corner of the living room a few meters away. The scene of him killing people only occupied a corner of your field of vision.

There was no close-up where it should be close-up. This "counter-intuitive" lens design is really wonderful.

Speaking of this, I want to talk about a new discovery of my own.

When Mossen killed the patrolman, I initially thought it was a classic "voyeuristic perspective", that is, the audience was the one peeping through the crack of the door, and was a witness to the murder, so they felt that what they saw was more real and exciting.

However, I thought about it later and I felt that it was not right. This was not peeping, but a perspective similar to "surveillance".

For those who have cats and dogs at home, you can think of the pet monitors you usually put in the living room. The perspective is very low, and you can't take pictures of people's faces, but only their legs.

That shot of Mossen gave me this feeling.

The "surveillance perspective" is really too cold. We sat outside the screen and watched coldly as Mossen, not far away, stabbed the patrolman to death with all his strength.

No wonder other film reviews say "it's like watching a crime record". From my personal perspective, it is indeed the case.

In this section, whether it is the action of Mossen sticking his butt down to push the kitchen knife, or the cold surveillance camera angle, all create this feeling, which is very similar to the social news of a certain place when you are browsing V blogs. A fixed camera in the surveillance video captures the process of someone being beaten/insulted/robbed, etc., which is a sense of déjà vu.

And the next scene where Mossen stood up and gasped after killing the patrolman, I remember that it was an upward angle, very hellish, and the apex of this upward angle was only slightly higher than the height of the patrolman's body, just hovering between "seeing Mossen from the perspective of the dead patrolman" and "shooting Mossen with an ordinary upward lens". Just this small difference can also show that the old man has mastered the camera position.

Then there is the surprise of "Daytime Rain". Perhaps influenced by the original novel, Director He has a lot more absurd flavor this time than before. For example, at the beginning, Wang Dali was used as a shoe-cleaning mat by a pair of leather-shoeed feet, and there was a classic funny scene in the small park, Wang Dali and Qiu Xue screamed, Tian Gang was in a dilemma, etc. This style of "floating above reality but not too far away" is not known to be a new attempt by the old man, anyway, I think it is pretty good.

The only subtle thing is the short memory flashback of Su Qi, which I think is too abrupt, and the high-speed flash + woman's scream is too conventional horror movie, not like He Xu's work. Later, I read this friend's film review [link: "Random Notes, Talking about the Original Work (Mainly Su Qi)"], and I feel that it is not ruled out that it was deleted in the later stage. I can only say that there are still some inappropriate places. Judging from the facts, it is not a failure, but it is indeed a bit strange.

As for the campus bullying part, the specific content is not filmed, and the continuous long-range view is used to give the audience space for spontaneous imagination. The flashback of Tian Gang is basically in a semi-bright and semi-dark background, and the montage flashback at the end, wow, there are too many people praising these, I don’t think it’s necessary to waste space to praise it, it’s really outstanding.

To be honest, what amazed me at the end was not only the lens itself, but also the fact that the old man rarely used this shooting technique before (after reading the relevant interview, it’s really different after the temporary change of the ending). It seems to have nothing to do with it, like a slide-like splicing of pictures, telling the beauty that has not been destroyed by school violence, which is really a tear killer.

There is a film review next door that specifically analyzes what each image corresponds to. Although the author said that it is all subjective conjecture, I feel that the speculation is very reasonable. If you are interested, you can go and have a look. There are instructions in the comment area.

Finally, welcome everyone to talk about the lens language of "Daytime Rain". Not only the lens position, but also the lighting, sound recording, and BGM are worth savoring. Looking forward to more sharing and communication.

(Finally, I am no longer in debt, and I shed tears of emotion)

Also, I was planning to write this review before, but everyone knows what happened before, so I moved it to now. (The limelight has passed, and some butter and cheese are trying to stick their heads out.jpg)

In short, I hope it will not be blocked. I will pray first.
